New Amsterdam – Case #4: Matilda Miranda

Victim: Oskar Svensson

Barely an hour had passed after solving the last murder case, and we already have another one. Does this city ever sleep?

This time, I arrived at the crime scene, 403 Labropolous Terrace, second. The enforcers had already arrived and were knocking on every door in the apartment block when I got there. Whilst they were doing that, I took the opportunity to check the door for fingerprints. I found two sets.

When the coast was clear, I stepped inside, and nothing could prepare me for what I was about to witness. The victim’s body was wedged into the kitchen counter. What the hell!?

The killer also left a message: Death to the new generation.

I inspected the body, and it become obvious that the victim had been poisoned, at some point between 19:30 – 20:45 on the night. His work ID was next to him, confirming his identity as Oskar Svensson, and he worked at the Foodbowl Director Grill as a waitstaff. I catalogued his fingerprints, confirming one of the sets on the front door as his.

I went into his bedroom, and it was ransacked. Many drawers were open, the safe was unlocked, and a syringe was spotted lying on the ground. I checked all three, and the second set of fingerprints that I found on the door were on all of them. Whoever fingerprints these were, they were definitely the killer’s. I checked the tenency agreement, and Oskar lived alone.

After checking his telephone and finding that nobody had called him, I went to the Foodbowl Director Grill and paid for backdoor access. I checked the staff records, and confirmed that none of them killed Oskar. I checked through the surveillance footage. I saw two people I did not recognise.

After asking around, it seemed like the killer I’m tracking down is of average height. I also located one of the two people I spotted in the surveillance footage. Her name was Hera Fotilas, but I was unable to determine if they were the killer or not.

I was not sure what to do at this point and it was getting very late, so I went to bed.

I woke up at 8:00am. I continued to ask around. Eventually, I got a positive ID on Bethany Rothschild, and she works at Portfolio Trust in Lai Grove. When I went there and checked the employment records, her fingerprint proved she was not the killer.

Shortly after this, the killer struck again! A body was reported on the 6th floor landing of Lai Grove.

Victim: Trinity Freeman

The writing on the wall was the same as before: Death to the new generation.

I did a quick search of the new victim. Her name was Trinity Freeman, she worked at the nearby Kingsmarque Management, she was killed between 09:45 – 11:00, and just like Oskar, she was poisoned.

Then I got shot.

Shot by an enforcer that had turned up to the crime scene and designated this area off-limits.

I escaped from the building with my life. I went to the nearest item store to purchase and apply a bandage. I was pretty shook up at this point, but I was determined not to let this stop my investigation. I don’t trust the enforcers as far as I can throw them.

After I applied some augments to myself, I returned to the scene of the crime. Both companies either side of the landing were taped off by the enforcers. I wanted to check the companies’ employment records to see if they were hiring a murderer.

I looked around at the landing. There was a power box nearby, and no enforcers were currently present in the area. I broke into the power box, disabled security, then closed the power doors, but not before I went inside first. I now had free reign to check both corporations.

After checking them both out, I learned that the killer does not work for either of them. I made my escape and had a think on how to track the killer.

Looking at the 6th floor landing, I noticed the security camera there. I had a thought that it might have recorded the moment of the murder. I looked at the building’s blueprints and found the security room on the 9th floor. When I went there, it was completely unguarded and nobody was there. I took my chance and went through the security footage.

At 10:42am, the victim was on camera, and by the looks of it, so too was the killer.

I left the security room and asked if anybody recognised the woman dressed in white in the photo. Most people commented that she looked angry when they saw her, increasing the chances that she was the real killer. Someone also spotted her at the Caldwell Building, so I went there next.

I knocked on a few doors in there. I got another lead: she was spotted at the Lemon Industries industrial plant. I decided to go there next.

I went to the front door. A person was walking out and I asked if they recognised her. They did! I now had a name to work with: Matilda Miranda. A name given to me by her friend.

I went to the city hall and looked up M. Miranda in the city directory. She lived at 403 Caldwell Building. I picked up some handcuffs and went there immediately.

I did a quick scan of the front door. Matching fingerprints. I’ve finally found her.

I lockpicked my way into her apartment, and handcuffed her. I acquired her fingerprints, then submitted the report at the city hall. After 24 hours, the case was finally closed.

The one blemish was that they believe I misidentified the murder weapon, which I said was the syringe at Oskar Svensson’s apartment. Perhaps the real murder weapon was on her? I did forget to search her when I handcuffed her, I must admit. I went back to her apartment later and failed to find a weapon of any kind. But she was most definitely the real killer, and she is now locked behind bars. That’s the most important thing.

On my way back home, I had some Yakisoba Pan and a cup of coffee. After the chaos of the last two days, I slept like a rock after I returned home.
