New Amsterdam – Case #1: Adisa Alolo

Victim: Guozni Tang

As I stared out of the window in my apartment in 201 Begay House dreaming of retirement, I intercepted a radio signal from the enforcers. A murder has taken place outside at Perkins Street. I got there as fast as I could.

I discovered the cadaver by the waterfront. A red-haired man laid there, with strange markings on the ground as if a ritual was taking place.

I looked over his body for a cause of death. He was clearly slashed to death by a bladed weapon. I estimated his time of death between 5:30pm and 6:45pm, so it was within the last few minutes of my arrival.

I checked his belongings for clues. Two objects stood out. The first was a utility knife, a possible murder weapon. The second was his wallet. With the wallet, I was able to confirm that his name was Guozni Tang, he lived at 102 Caldwell Building, and he worked at the Sync Clinic that was nearby.

The only other clue I noticed was a crumpled piece of paper. I checked for fingerprints, then unfurled it. It read as follows:

Let’s play
OALAOL
_._____

I asked around to see if anybody else had noticed anything about the murderer. The only information I got was that they were a tall person.

I figured that this was all I was going to get from the crime scene, so I went to the nearby Sync Centre, the place where he worked. I found that his account was logged in at the computer in the back room. I checked through his email, and I was not able to find any clues. The only information I was able to obtain was his passcode.

I checked out his place of residence at Caldwell Building. I learned that he lived alone. With the crumpled paper clue in mind, I went through his address book.

There was one name that started with one of the letters in the note: Luca. They live in 102 Wolfe Terrace. I found no other useful clues at Guozni’s apartment, so I decided to head there next.

When I arrived there, I quickly learned from their tenancy agreement that Luca’s surname is Lamb. This unfortunately does not comply with the clue, so it was a dead end.

Thinking further about the crumpled paper clue, there are only three unique letters in it: A, L and O. I decided to search through the city directory to see what I could find.

It did not take long. On the very first page, a promising lead presented itself. A person by the name “A. Alolo”, and they live in 202 Caldwell Building, the same building the victim lived in. After going to the City Hall to grab the case papers and a pair of handcuffs, I rushed over there and scanned the door for fingerprints.

There were two sets of fingerprints on it: one that I didn’t recognise, and one that I did. They match the fingerprints left on the crumpled note. I have found the killer!

As I prepared to pick the lock of the apartment, the door swung open wide. A person stepped out of the apartment, and did not close the door behind them. I peeked inside and saw another person getting ready for bed. A short while later, they were fast asleep. I made my move and searched the apartment.

As suspected, two people live here. One of them is Selin Said, and the other… is Adisa Alolo. His name fit the clue like a glove. This was 100% the killer, I just needed to figure out which of the two people was him.

I remembered that the person I’m looking for is tall. I checked the sleeping person, and they were indeed tall. I caught up with the person that left the apartment earlier… and they were of average height. The killer was fast asleep, so I rushed back to the apartment.

When I arrived, he had woken up and was getting ready to leave. When he did leave and started heading down the stairs, I immediately handcuffed him. I checked his belongings. His wallet confirmed his identity as the killer, and he also carried a sword, which was the real murder weapon. I checked his fingerprints, and they matched up with what I saw at the crime scene. The case was solved!

I returned back to my apartment after submitting the paperwork. I slept for a few hours, looked out of my apartment window, then suddenly…

A radio message confirmed a new murder has taken place. Barely 15 hours after the previous one.

Not much time to rest in this city, is there?
